There is a small parking lot on Sunset Blvd near McCarran Airport where you can watch planes land and takeoff.
The north side of Sunset Blvd between Eastern and Paradise.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
There is one row of parking spots up against the airport fence. You can tune your radio to a specific station to hear the air traffic controllers, which fascinates me. Every time we’ve been there the planes have come in from the west and landed on the airport’s longest runways right in front of us. The lot is open 5am to 11pm daily.
WHAT TO TAKE
Nothing in particular. Sometimes I stop at Sonic on the way for a cold drink!
Sometimes we need an activity where I don’t actually have to do anything. If the boys are too boogery to be around other kids, but healthy enough to still want to go out somewhere, “airplanes” is a good option. Sometimes mommy is having a rough day and we need to get out of the house, but I don’t have enough energy to chase babies, so we go watch airplanes.
WHAT WE LIKED
My boys think airplanes are awesome. I like that everyone is contained in the car and I like listening to air traffic controllers on a busy day.
WHAT WE DIDN’T LIKE
Depending on what time of day you go, turning left out of the observation lot can be a nightmare. Also, I have guilty feelings about running my car to keep the a/c going and contributing to pollution.
WILL WE GO AGAIN
The novelty is waning, since we have been several times in the two years we have lived here, but I think we can still get some mileage out of this activity.
